Pedro Sánchez's Coalition with Podemos
Political coalitionAbout
Pedro Sánchez's coalition with Podemos was a significant political development in Spain. Formed in January 2020, it marked the first national coalition government in the modern era. The Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), led by Sánchez, partnered with Unidas Podemos (UP), a radical left alliance including Podemos and the United Left. This coalition allowed Sánchez to secure the prime ministership after the November 2019 general election. The partnership aimed to push progressive legislation, particularly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite achieving legislative successes, the coalition faced internal tensions due to political differences and personality clashes. Podemos held five cabinet positions, but their influence was often at odds with the more moderate PSOE. The partnership was crucial for passing legislation but faced opposition from the right-wing parties. The coalition's dynamics changed with the emergence of Sumar, a new left-wing platform, in later years. Podemos's role diminished as some of its members joined Sumar, leading to a shift in the coalition's composition and challenges in maintaining political stability.
