Eddie Eagan was a remarkable American athlete, best known for his achievements in boxing and bobsleigh. Born on April 26, 1897, in Denver, Colorado, he grew up with a passion for sports, inspired by fictional athlete Frank Merriwell. Eagan's athletic career began in boxing, where he won the U.S. national amateur heavyweight title in 1919 while studying at Yale University. He also competed in the 1920 Summer Olympics, winning a gold medal in the light-heavyweight division. Eagan's versatility extended beyond boxing when he won a second gold medal at the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid as a member of the four-man bobsled team. This achievement made him the only athlete to win gold medals in both the Summer and Winter Olympics in different sports. Beyond his athletic accomplishments, Eagan was a respected attorney and served as an assistant district attorney and chairman of the New York State Athletic Commission. He passed away on June 14, 1967, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most accomplished athletes in Olympic history.
