The addax, scientifically known as Addax nasomaculatus, is a critically endangered desert antelope native to the Sahara Desert. It is characterized by its distinctive long, corkscrew horns and a stocky build, with adults weighing between 95 and 105 kg. The addax's coat color changes seasonally, turning white in summer to reflect sunlight and darker in winter. This antelope is highly adapted to its desert habitat, with large, flat hooves that prevent it from sinking into sand and a unique ability to survive without water for extended periods by obtaining moisture from plants. Addaxes form small nomadic herds, typically led by a dominant male, and are herbivores, feeding on grasses and shrubs. Their population has drastically declined due to overhunting and habitat disturbances. Conservation efforts include reintroduction programs in protected reserves across North Africa. Despite fewer than 100 individuals remaining in the wild, there are thousands in captivity, offering hope for future reintroductions. The addax's critically endangered status highlights the need for continued conservation to protect this remarkable desert species.
