Akagera National Park, located in northeastern Rwanda, is a vast and diverse wildlife reserve. Established in 1934, it covers approximately 1,122 square kilometers, making it the largest national park in Rwanda. The park's diverse ecosystems include savannahs, woodlands, wetlands, and lakes, such as Lake Ihema, offering a rich habitat for wildlife. Akagera is renowned for being the only place in Rwanda where visitors can see the Big Five animals: lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo, and rhinos. The park offers various activities like game drives, boat safaris, and guided walks, allowing visitors to explore its vibrant biodiversity. Conservation efforts by African Parks and the Rwanda Development Board have significantly improved the park's wildlife populations. Akagera is also a haven for birdwatchers, with over 500 species recorded.
