Angelo Dundee was a renowned American boxing trainer and cornerman, born on August 30, 1921, in Philadelphia. He began his career in boxing by serving as an aircraft mechanic in the U.S. Air Force during World War II, where he gained experience as a cornerman in boxing tournaments. After the war, Dundee worked at Stillman's Gym in New York City before relocating to Miami Beach, Florida, where he co-founded the Fifth Street Gym with his brother Chris. Dundee's first major success came when he cornered for Carmen Basilio in 1955. Dundee is best known for his long-term collaboration with Muhammad Ali, training him from 1960 until Ali's retirement. He also worked with other notable fighters like Sugar Ray Leonard, George Foreman, and José Nápoles. Dundee was celebrated for his strategic insights and ability to handle cuts and manage fighters effectively. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1992 and passed away on February 1, 2012, at the age of 90. Throughout his career, Dundee trained over two dozen world champions, cementing his legacy as one of boxing's most respected trainers.
