About

The Apollo Victoria Theatre is a prominent London landmark, originally opening as the New Victoria Cinema in October 1930. Designed by architects W.E. Trent and E. Wamsley Lewis, it features a striking art deco style with an underwater theme. The theatre boasts two almost identical facades on Wilton Road and Vauxhall Bridge Road. Initially intended for films and live shows, it included stage facilities and dressing rooms. The venue closed in 1975 but reopened in 1980 as the Apollo Victoria Theatre, hosting renowned performers like Shirley Bassey and Cliff Richard. Today, the Apollo Victoria is one of London's largest theatres, with a seating capacity of 2,304. It has been home to the hit musical "Wicked" since 2006. The theatre's interior was transformed to reflect the Emerald City, enhancing its appeal. Known for its architectural significance, it is Grade II* listed by English Heritage. The venue continues to host major productions, maintaining its status as a beloved West End destination. Its rich history and ongoing restoration efforts ensure its place in London's cultural landscape.
