ARP 2600

Electronic instrument

About

The ARP 2600 is a semi-modular monophonic synthesizer introduced by ARP Instruments in 1971. It is known for its versatility and accessibility, offering a pre-wired internal signal path that allows it to be used without patch cords, while still providing the flexibility of modular synthesis for advanced users. The instrument features three voltage-controlled oscillators (VCOs), a 24 dB/octave low-pass filter, two envelope generators, and a voltage-controlled amplifier (VCA). Additional components include a ring modulator, sample and hold module, noise generator, and spring reverb. The ARP 2600 was widely used in various genres of music and by notable artists such as Stevie Wonder and Edgar Winter. It also played a significant role in sound design, famously used by Ben Burtt to create the voice of R2-D2 in Star Wars. The synthesizer underwent several revisions during its production from 1971 to 1981, including different keyboard models like the 3620 duo-phonic keyboard. Its influence on electronic music and its enduring popularity make the ARP 2600 a legendary instrument in the history of synthesizers.
