Black and Chestnut Eagle

Animal species

About

The Black-and-chestnut Eagle, also known as Isidor's Eagle, is a large bird of prey found in the Andes mountain range. It measures between 60 to 80 cm in length and has a wingspan of up to 180 cm. The eagle's plumage is primarily black with chestnut breast and leg feathers, providing camouflage in its dense forest habitat. Juveniles are white with brown markings, gradually attaining adult plumage over four years. Both sexes have prominent crests, but females are larger. This eagle inhabits dense, undisturbed montane forests from Venezuela to Argentina. It is a top predator, feeding on medium-sized mammals like monkeys and squirrels. The species is classified as Endangered due to habitat loss and human persecution. With fewer than 1,000 mature individuals, conservation efforts are crucial to protect its habitat and reduce conflicts with humans. The Black-and-chestnut Eagle plays a vital role in maintaining ecosystem balance, but its remote habitat makes it difficult to study and conserve.
