Borneo Jungles

Location

About

Borneo's jungles are among the oldest and most diverse ecosystems in the world, estimated to be around 140 million years old. They cover a vast area, spanning across Indonesia, Malaysia, and Brunei. The lowland rainforests, which cover about 57% of the island, are home to a staggering array of flora and fauna. There are approximately 15,000 plant species, including 3,000 species of trees, and a rich variety of wildlife such as the proboscis monkey, orangutan, and clouded leopard. The Borneo jungles offer a unique wildlife experience with habitats ranging from dipterocarp forests to mangrove swamps. They are a critical refuge for many endangered species. However, these ecosystems face significant threats from deforestation and agricultural expansion, notably palm oil plantations. Despite these challenges, Borneo remains a vital destination for both conservation efforts and tourism, offering opportunities to explore its natural beauty and support local conservation initiatives.
