City

About

Brasília, the capital of Brazil, is renowned for its unique urban design and architectural landmarks. Located in the Federal District on the central plateau, it was built in just four years and inaugurated in 1960. The city's layout, designed by Lúcio Costa, resembles a bird or airplane, with two main axes: the Monumental Axis for government buildings and the Highway Axis for residential areas. Oscar Niemeyer designed many iconic structures, including the National Congress and the Cathedral of Brasília. Brasília is a hub for government and service industries, hosting many federal institutions and international organizations. The city is known for its modernist architecture and was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987. While it does not rely entirely on hydropower for electricity, Brazil's energy matrix is predominantly hydroelectric. The city faces challenges like pollution and crime but remains a symbol of Brazil's modernization and growth. It offers a blend of cultural and natural attractions, including Lake Paranoá and the surrounding highlands.
