About

Charlotte Mason (1842–1923) was a British educator and reformer who dedicated her life to improving children's education. Born in Wales, she was mostly educated at home before pursuing a career in teaching. Mason taught at Davison School in Worthing, England, and later at Bishop Otter Teacher Training College. Her vision was to provide a liberal education for all, regardless of social class. She believed that children are born persons capable of dealing with ideas and knowledge, not just recipients of facts. Mason's educational philosophy emphasized a broad, liberal arts curriculum, which included literature, art, music, science, and nature study. She advocated for the use of "living books" to engage children with great ideas and promote a love of learning. Her work led to the establishment of the Parents' National Educational Union and the House of Education in Ambleside. Mason's principles continue to influence education today, particularly in homeschooling and Christian education movements. Her legacy is marked by a focus on cultivating wisdom, critical thinking, and a lifelong love of learning.
