Chloé Zhao Chloé Zhao, born Zhao Ting on March 31, 1982, in Beijing, China, is a renowned filmmaker known for her poignant storytelling and innovative approach to filmmaking. She spent her early years in China before moving to the UK and later the USA, where she finished high school in Los Angeles. Zhao studied political science at Mount Holyoke College before discovering her passion for filmmaking at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. Her career began with short films, including Daughters, which garnered several awards. Zhao's feature films, such as Songs My Brothers Taught Me and The Rider, showcase her documentary-style approach, often featuring non-professional actors. Her breakthrough came with Nomadland, a critically acclaimed film that earned her the Oscar for Best Director, making her the first woman of color to receive this honor. Zhao has also directed Eternals for Marvel and is involved in various upcoming projects, including a Bass Reeves biopic and a Dracula adaptation.
