Commandaria
WineAbout
Commandaria is a renowned Cypriot dessert wine, characterized by its sweet, fruity, and spicy flavors. Produced in the Commandaria region of Cyprus, this wine is crafted from indigenous grapes, primarily Xynisteri and Mavro. The grapes are sun-dried to concentrate their sugars, resulting in a rich, amber-colored wine with a high alcohol content of 15-20%. Commandaria's history dates back to the 12th century, associated with the Knights of St. John, and it remains one of the world's oldest named wines still in production. Commandaria is aged for at least two years in oak barrels, enhancing its complexity and depth. The wine features a harmonious balance of sweetness and acidity, with aromas reminiscent of dried fruits, honey, and spices. Its protected designation of origin ensures authenticity and quality. Commandaria's rich cultural heritage and traditional production methods have made it a cherished wine globally, particularly noted for its historical significance and enduring appeal.
