Community Engagement through Umuganda

Concept

About

Umuganda is a traditional Rwandan practice that fosters community engagement and participation in various development projects. It takes place on the last Saturday of every month, where all able-bodied citizens between 18 and 65 years old contribute to activities such as cleaning public spaces, constructing infrastructure, and environmental conservation. This communal effort not only enhances social cohesion but also promotes self-reliance and sustainability. Through Umuganda, Rwanda has successfully integrated plastic waste management and environmental discussions into its community activities. The practice supports the country's ambitious environmental policies, including the ban on single-use plastics. By engaging communities in these efforts, Umuganda plays a vital role in maintaining Rwanda's cleanliness and promoting a culture of shared responsibility for environmental sustainability.
