Complutense University of Madrid is one of the oldest universities in the world, founded in Alcalá de Henares in 1293. It was originally known as the Estudio de Escuelas Generales and was later expanded by Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cisneros with a papal bull in 1499. The university moved to Madrid in 1836 and has since become a prominent public research institution. It is named after the ancient Roman settlement of Complutum. Today, Complutense University is a major educational hub, enrolling over 86,000 students across its two campuses in Madrid. The university offers a wide range of academic programs and is recognized for its extensive library network, which includes over 3 million books and 130,000 e-books. Its partnership with OCLC enhances global access to its resources. Complutense University is also known for its historical contributions, including the production of the Complutensian Polyglot Bible.
