Coulée de Serrant

Vineyard

About

Coulée de Serrant is a historic vineyard located in the Loire Valley, specifically in the Savennières region. It has been cultivated continuously since its establishment by Cistercian monks in 1130, making it one of the oldest vineyards in France. The vineyard spans 7 hectares, planted exclusively with Chenin Blanc grapes, and is renowned for its unique terroir characterized by schist soils with quartz and volcanic rock. This combination provides excellent drainage and a microclimate that enhances the complexity of the wines. The Joly family has owned Coulée de Serrant since 1961, with Nicolas Joly being a pioneer in biodynamic viticulture. He transitioned the vineyard to biodynamic practices in the 1980s, emphasizing natural balance and soil health. The estate produces three distinct wines: "Coulée de Serrant," "Clos de la Bergerie," and "Les Vieux Clos." These wines are celebrated for their power, minerality, and aging potential, making them some of the finest white wines in France. The vineyard's commitment to biodynamics has inspired a global movement towards sustainable agriculture.
