Delphi, an ancient Greek sanctuary, holds significant historical and cultural importance. Located on Mount Parnassus, it was considered the center of the world, marked by the omphalos stone. The site was initially inhabited during Mycenaean times and gained fame for the Oracle of Apollo, where Pythia delivered cryptic prophecies. These oracles influenced major decisions across the Mediterranean, drawing visitors from all walks of life. Delphi hosted the Pythian Games, a panhellenic event, and was part of the Delphic Amphictyonic League, a political union preventing member states from warring with each other. The sanctuary featured notable structures like the Temple of Apollo, a theater, and a stadium. Over time, Delphi fell under Roman control and eventually declined with the rise of Christianity. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting tourists and scholars alike for its rich history and archaeological significance.
