Detroit Red Wings vs. Colorado Avalanche
Sports rivalryAbout
The Detroit Red Wings and Colorado Avalanche have a storied rivalry in the National Hockey League (NHL), marked by intense on-ice battles and dramatic playoff series. This rivalry was particularly fueled by a significant incident in the 1996 Western Conference Finals. During Game 6, Avalanche forward Claude Lemieux checked Red Wings center Kris Draper from behind, causing severe injuries to Draper's face. This event set the stage for future confrontations between the two teams. The rivalry reached a boiling point on March 26, 1997, in a game at Joe Louis Arena, known as "Fight Night at the Joe." The game featured numerous fights, including a notable brawl involving goalies Patrick Roy and Mike Vernon. Over the years, the teams have met in the playoffs six times, with both sides winning three series each. Despite the Red Wings now competing in the Eastern Conference, their historical clashes with the Avalanche remain some of the most memorable in NHL history.
