Drahthaar

Dog breed

About

The Deutsch Drahthaar, often confused with the German Wirehaired Pointer, is a versatile hunting dog breed developed in Germany in the late 19th century. It was created by combining breeds like the Griffon, Pudelpointer, and Stichelhaar to produce a robust, wire-coated dog capable of hunting both large and small game in various environments. The name "Deutsch Drahthaar" translates to "German Wirehair," contributing to the confusion between the two breeds. Deutsch Drahthaars are medium-sized dogs with a distinctive wiry coat that requires regular grooming, including stripping to maintain its quality. They are intelligent, energetic, and sturdy, making them excellent dual-purpose hunters. The breed is recognized for its ability to point game on land and retrieve from water. Deutsch Drahthaars are issued papers by the Verein Deutsch Drahthaar (VDD) and undergo rigorous performance tests and health screenings. They are not inherently superior to German Wirehaired Pointers but offer consistency in breeding standards and performance.
