Dublin Citizen Initiative

Community project

About

The Dublin Citizens' Assembly is a community-driven initiative focused on examining and proposing local government structures, particularly the role of a directly-elected mayor for Dublin. Established in February 2022, it consists of 80 members, including a chairperson, randomly selected public members, and councillors from local authorities. The Assembly aims to identify the best-suited local government system for Dublin, considering strengths and weaknesses of the current model and potential benefits of a directly-elected mayor. The Assembly's recommendations encompass a wide range of powers to be devolved to a directly-elected mayor, including housing, economic development, climate change, and cultural heritage. This initiative highlights the importance of community engagement in shaping local governance and decision-making processes. By involving diverse stakeholders, it fosters a collaborative approach to addressing Dublin's unique challenges and opportunities, ensuring that local needs are met through inclusive and participatory governance.
