About

The 2011 Egyptian Revolution, also known as the 25 January Revolution, was a pivotal event in Egypt's history. It began on January 25, 2011, with widespread protests across the country, primarily in Cairo's Tahrir Square. The uprising was sparked by a desire for political reform, an end to corruption, and the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak, who had ruled for nearly three decades. Protesters from diverse backgrounds united to demand free elections, freedom of speech, and improved economic conditions. The revolution led to Mubarak's resignation on February 11, 2011, with power transferred to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces. Despite initial optimism, the transition period was marked by continued military control and eventual Islamist rule under Mohamed Morsi. His ousting in 2013 by the military, led by Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, resulted in a new authoritarian regime. The revolution's legacy is complex, with significant political and social changes but also a return to authoritarian rule.
