About

The Gansu Wind Farm, also known as the Jiuquan Wind Power Base, is the largest onshore wind farm in the world, located in the western part of Gansu Province, China. It is part of a series of large wind farms under construction in the desert area near Jiuquan City. The project began in 2009 and was initially scheduled for completion by 2020, with a planned capacity of 20 GW. Currently, around 8 GW to 10 GW of capacity is operational. The wind farm will feature approximately 7,000 wind turbines upon completion. Despite its immense capacity, the project faces challenges due to its remote location, which limits power transmission to densely populated areas. The wind farm plays a significant role in China's renewable energy sector, contributing to reducing carbon emissions and supporting local energy needs. Its development involves overcoming harsh environmental conditions, including frequent dust storms and extreme temperatures.
