George Washington was the first President of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797. He was a military leader during the American Revolutionary War and is considered one of the founding fathers of the United States. Born in Westmoreland County, Virginia in 1732, Washington was raised in a wealthy planter family and received little formal education. He worked as a surveyor and later became a successful planter himself, owning a large estate at Mount Vernon. He married Martha Dandridge Custis, a wealthy widow, in 1759 and had no children of his own. Washington's military career began during the French and Indian War, where he served as a lieutenant colonel and later as a brigadier general. He played a key role in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, leading the troops to victory over the British at Yorktown in 1781. He was unanimously elected as the first President of the United States in 1789 and served two terms, establishing many of the customs and traditions of the office. He is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in American history, known for his honesty, integrity, and leadership abilities.
