Georgia O'Keeffe's Abiquiu Home

Historic location

About

Georgia O'Keeffe's Abiquiu Home is a historic house museum located in Abiquiu, New Mexico. The property, which O'Keeffe purchased in 1945, reflects a blend of Native American and Spanish Colonial architectural styles. Originally built in the 18th century, the adobe structure was restored and modernized by O'Keeffe and her friend Maria Chabot between 1946 and 1949. The home features thick adobe walls, a flat roof supported by vigas and latillas, and modernist elements like skylights and large windows, providing expansive views of the surrounding landscape. The property includes a garden that was a significant part of O'Keeffe's life, providing fresh produce for her homes in Abiquiu and Ghost Ranch. The garden is irrigated by an acequia, a traditional communal irrigation system. O'Keeffe lived in the home from 1949 until 1984, when she moved to Santa Fe. The Abiquiu Home is now part of the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum and is open for public tours, offering insights into O'Keeffe's artistic inspiration and connection to New Mexico's landscapes. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1998.
