The Great Barrier Reef is the world's largest coral reef system, located off the northeastern coast of Australia in the Coral Sea. It stretches over 2,300 kilometers and includes more than 2,900 individual reefs and 900 islands. This vast ecosystem is home to an incredible array of marine life, including over 1,500 species of fish, 400 species of coral, and 4,000 species of mollusks. The reef also supports six of the world's seven species of marine turtles and numerous species of whales and dolphins. The Great Barrier Reef is not only a natural wonder but also a crucial part of the global ecosystem. It provides vital protection for coastlines and supports a diverse range of habitats, from shallow inshore areas to deep oceanic environments. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981, the reef faces challenges such as ocean acidification and climate change.
