Greek People’s Liberation Army (ELAS)

Military organization

About

The Greek People's Liberation Army (ELAS) was the military wing of the National Liberation Front (EAM), a broad coalition of leftist and communist organizations formed during World War II. Established in 1942, ELAS played a pivotal role in the Greek resistance against the Axis occupation by Germany, Italy, and Bulgaria. Led by figures like Aris Velouchiotis and Major General Stefanos Sarafis, ELAS employed guerrilla tactics and unconventional warfare to challenge the occupiers and their collaborators. The organization garnered significant support among the Greek populace, drawing on a rich tradition of resistance and national pride. ELAS's impact extended beyond military operations; it also provided aid and support to civilians affected by the war. Following the end of World War II, ELAS was involved in the Greek Civil War, fighting against government forces backed by Western powers. Despite its eventual defeat and disarmament, ELAS left a lasting legacy as a symbol of resistance and resilience in Greek history. Its contributions are commemorated through various cultural and historical artifacts, reflecting the enduring spirit of unity and solidarity it fostered during a tumultuous period.
