Gregory James LeMond, born on June 26, 1961, in Lakewood, California, is a renowned American former road racing cyclist. He is celebrated for winning the Tour de France three times (1986, 1989, 1990) and the Road Race World Championship twice (1983, 1989). LeMond was the first non-European professional cyclist to win the men's Tour de France, marking a significant milestone in the sport. His career was marked by resilience, as he overcame a near-fatal hunting accident in 1987 to achieve an improbable comeback in 1989. LeMond is also recognized for his innovative approach to cycling. He was an early adopter of modern training methods and technologies, such as aerodynamic handlebars and carbon fiber frames. He championed these advancements through his company, LeMond Bicycles. LeMond is a vocal critic of doping in cycling and has been involved in various philanthropic efforts, including being a founding board member of 1in6.org. He retired from professional cycling in 1994 and was inducted into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame in 1996.
