Harry S. Truman was the 33rd President of the United States, serving from 1945 to 1953. Born on May 8, 1884, in Lamar, Missouri, Truman grew up in a family of modest means and was the only president to have been born in Missouri. He graduated from Independence High School in 1901 and later attended Kansas City Junior College. Truman's early career was marked by his service in the United States Army during World War I, where he rose to the rank of captain. Truman's political career began in 1919 when he was elected as a county judge in Jackson County, Missouri. He later served as a United States Senator from Missouri from 1935 to 1945. Truman's presidency was marked by significant events, including the end of World War II, the dropping of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the beginning of the Cold War. He also made the difficult decision to drop the atomic bomb, which led to Japan's surrender and the end of World War II.
