Hôtel Tassel

Landmark

About

Hôtel Tassel, located in Brussels, Belgium, is a seminal Art Nouveau landmark designed by Victor Horta. Built between 1892 and 1893 for Professor Emile Tassel, it is considered one of the first true Art Nouveau buildings due to its innovative plan and use of materials. The structure consists of two conventional buildings linked by a steel and glass central section, which serves as a light shaft and connects the rooms. This design allowed for maximum natural light and created a unique spatial composition. The Hôtel Tassel features elaborate details such as stained glass windows, mosaic flooring, and intricate woodwork. It was a precursor to Horta's later works, including Hôtel Solvay and Hôtel van Eetvelde. In 2000, it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list, highlighting its cultural significance. The building's influence extends beyond architecture, inspiring artists like Hector Guimard. Today, it remains a testament to Horta's pioneering style, blending nature-inspired motifs with industrial materials.
