He gained widespread recognition for his science fiction series, Silo, which he initially self-published through Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing. Before becoming a successful author, Howey worked as a yacht captain, computer technician, and audio technician. His experiences as a sailor influenced his adventurous spirit and writing style. Howey's success with the Silo series, particularly "Wool," led to significant print deals while maintaining e-book rights. He has sold over three million copies worldwide, with his works translated into more than 40 languages. Howey is known for advocating for authors' rights and self-publishing.
