Hula is a traditional Hawaiian dance characterized by its narrative storytelling through intricate hand gestures and movements. It tells stories of Hawaiian culture, history, and myths, often accompanied by chants or songs known as mele. The dance is deeply rooted in Hawaiian spirituality and was historically performed to honor the gods, promote fertility, or praise chiefs. Hula involves fluid steps and graceful arm movements, with each gesture representing elements of nature, emotions, or concepts. Hula has two main forms: hula kahiko, the traditional style performed with percussion instruments like the ipu and pahu drums, and hula ʻauana, the modern style incorporating Western instruments like the ukulele. Traditional attire includes kapa skirts and leis, while modern costumes may feature bright cellophane. Despite its evolution, hula remains a revered art form that preserves Hawaiian culture and history through dance and storytelling.
