Idi Amin

Person

Idi Amin was a Ugandan military officer and politician who served as the President of Uganda from 1971 to 1979. Born in Koboko, Uganda, in 1928, Amin rose through the ranks of the Ugandan Army to become a commander of the Presidential Guard. He seized power in a military coup in 1971, overthrowing President Milton Obote, and established a brutal and authoritarian regime. During his rule, Amin implemented a series of policies that were characterized by human rights abuses, economic mismanagement, and ethnic violence. He was known for his erratic behavior, and his regime was marked by widespread torture, forced labor, and mass killings. Amin's policies also led to a significant decline in Uganda's economy, and the country became isolated from the international community. Despite his brutal reputation, Amin remained in power until 1979, when he was overthrown by a coalition of Ugandan rebels and Tanzanian troops.
