Indira Gandhi
PersonIndira Gandhi was a pioneering Indian politician who served as the Prime Minister of India from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1980 until her assassination in 1984. Born on November 19, 1917, in Allahabad, India, Gandhi was the daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, and Kamala Nehru. She was educated at Oxford University and later at the University of Lucknow, where she earned a degree in law. Gandhi's political career began in the 1950s, when she joined the Indian National Congress and became involved in various social and economic development initiatives. She quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a key figure in the government and eventually succeeding her father as Prime Minister in 1966. Gandhi's leadership was marked by significant economic and social reforms, including the nationalization of major industries, the implementation of a comprehensive family planning program, and the normalization of relations with neighboring countries. Her government also faced significant challenges, including the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 and the Emergency declared in 1975. Despite these challenges, Gandhi remained a powerful and influential figure in Indian politics until her assassination on October 31, 1984.
