José Luis Martínez-Almeida José Luis Martínez-Almeida is the Mayor of Madrid, serving since June 2019. Born on April 17, 1975, he graduated in law from the Pontifical University of Comillas and became a state lawyer in 2001. He has held various positions, including Director-General of Historic Heritage and Secretary of the Council of Government of the Community of Madrid. Martínez-Almeida is a member of the People's Party and was elected mayor with the support of Ciudadanos and Vox.As mayor, Martínez-Almeida has focused on mobility, climate protection, and sustainable development. He suspended the low emission zone Madrid Central and has invested in public transport, aiming for a fully electric system by 2027. His tenure has been marked by both environmental initiatives and controversies, including a scandal involving contract awards during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these challenges, he continues to lead Madrid with a focus on sustainability and infrastructure development.
