PersonAbout
Karl Marx was a German philosopher, economist, and revolutionary socialist born on May 5, 1818, in Trier, Prussia. He studied philosophy at the universities of Bonn, Berlin, and Jena, earning his doctorate in 1841. Marx's work was heavily influenced by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, but he also critiqued Hegel's ideas. He became a journalist, writing for the Rheinische Zeitung and later the Neue Rheinische Zeitung, where he expressed his views on socialism and economics. Marx is best known for co-authoring The Communist Manifesto with Friedrich Engels in 1848 and writing Das Kapital, a comprehensive critique of capitalism. His theories, including the labor theory of value and historical materialism, form the basis of Marxism. Marx spent much of his life in London, where he continued to write and was involved in the International Workingmen's Association. He died on March 14, 1883, in London, leaving behind a legacy that has significantly influenced modern thought on economics, politics, and society.
