Mountain

About

Mount Kilimanjaro is Africa's highest mountain and the world's tallest freestanding peak, standing at 5,895 meters above sea level. Located in northeastern Tanzania near the Kenyan border, it is a dormant volcanic massif consisting of three principal volcanic cones: Kibo, Mawenzi, and Shira. The mountain offers a unique climbing experience, traversing five distinct ecological zones from tropical rainforest to alpine desert and finally, the glacial summit. This diversity supports a wide range of flora and fauna, including monkeys, elephants, and unique plant species like the giant lobelia. Climbing Kilimanjaro is a popular adventure, attracting thousands annually. While it requires physical fitness and acclimatization, the ascent is achievable without mountaineering equipment. The mountain's snow-capped peak and glaciers are breathtaking, though it has lost a significant portion of its ice cap over the years. Kilimanjaro National Park, established in 1973, protects the mountain and its diverse ecosystems. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1987, it offers stunning views of the African savannah and Rift Valley, making it a truly unforgettable experience.
