Klingon
LanguageAbout
Klingon, known as tlhIngan Hol, is a constructed language developed by linguist Marc Okrand for the Star Trek universe. It is renowned for its guttural phonology, featuring sounds often pronounced from the back of the throat, which contributes to its alien and harsh sound. The language has a simple vowel inventory similar to many human languages but boasts a complex consonant system with retroflex and uvular sounds. Klingon's grammar is agglutinative, meaning words are formed by adding morphemes without altering their spelling or phonetics. It uses an object-subject-verb word order, uncommon in human languages. Klingon lacks traditional verb tenses, instead using aspects to convey temporal information. It has a dedicated community and resources, including the Klingon Language Institute, which facilitates learning and cultural activities. With a vocabulary of around 2,500 words, Klingon is used in various contexts, from cultural events to literature translations.
