Koala Eucalyptus Diet

Dietary concept

About

Koalas primarily feed on eucalyptus leaves, which are toxic to most animals due to their high content of phenolics and terpenes. Despite this, koalas have evolved a specialized digestive system that allows them to detoxify these compounds. Their diet consists mainly of selected eucalyptus species, with preferences varying by region and individual. Koalas consume about 500 grams of leaves daily, which are low in nutrients but high in fiber and water content. Koalas' unique digestive system includes a long caecum where specialized bacteria break down the tough leaves. These bacteria are acquired from their mother through a process involving the ingestion of a specialized fecal substance called "pap." This adaptation enables koalas to thrive on a diet that would be lethal to most other animals. Their slow metabolism helps conserve energy, as the digestion process is energy-intensive. Koalas are selective eaters, choosing leaves based on nutritional content and chemical composition, which is crucial for their survival.
