Kryptonian
Fictional languageAbout
Kryptonian is a fictional language from the Superman universe, known for its complexity and multiple written forms. Initially, it appeared as random squiggles in comics, but in the 1970s, E. Nelson Bridwell developed a 118-letter alphabet called Kryptonese. Later, in 2000, DC Comics introduced a transliteration alphabet, renaming the language to Kryptonian. This version uses symbols to represent each English letter, allowing for English text to be written in a Kryptonian style. The Kryptonian language has evolved further in media, such as in the 2013 film Man of Steel, where Dr. Christine Schreyer created a new Kryptonian language with its own writing system. This version is characterized by a subject-object-verb sentence structure and uses accents to indicate nuances. Despite these developments, Kryptonian remains largely a visual element, with its written forms often appearing in films and comics as a way to connect Superman with his Kryptonian heritage.
