Kumbh Mela

Event

About

Kumbh Mela is the world's largest human gathering, attracting millions to India's sacred cities of Haridwar, Prayagraj, Nashik, and Ujjain. It is rooted in Hindu mythology, celebrating the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan) where drops of the nectar of immortality fell at these sites. The event is held every 12 years, with smaller versions occurring at intervals of 3 and 6 years. It is a time for spiritual cleansing through ritualistic bathing in sacred rivers, believed to wash away sins and grant liberation. The Mela combines spiritual practices with vibrant cultural celebrations. It features grand processions led by sadhus and akharas, devotional singing, and religious discourses. The event is recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, symbolizing unity and faith. Beyond its religious significance, Kumbh Mela is a social and cultural spectacle, offering a diverse array of performances, food, and traditions from across India. It creates an egalitarian space where people from all walks of life come together, transcending social barriers.
