Lake Baikal, located in southern Siberia, Russia, is the world's largest and deepest freshwater lake. It stretches for 636 kilometers and has a maximum width of 79 kilometers, covering a surface area of approximately 31,722 square kilometers. With a maximum depth of 1,642 meters, Baikal holds about 20% of the world's unfrozen freshwater, making it a vital source of fresh water globally. Baikal is also renowned for its rich biodiversity, hosting over 2,500 species, many of which are endemic. The lake's unique ecosystem supports a variety of life forms, including the Baikal seal and numerous fish species. Surrounded by mountains, it creates a mild microclimate, moderating the harsh Siberian weather. Baikal's age is estimated at 25-30 million years, making it the oldest freshwater lake on Earth. Its clarity allows visibility of up to 40 meters, and it is considered one of the purest bodies of water worldwide.
