Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, covering approximately 31,700 square miles. It is situated at an average elevation of 607.71 feet above sea level, making it the highest of the Great Lakes. The lake's shoreline stretches over 2,726 miles, including numerous islands like the Apostle Islands and Isle Royale. Its vast volume of 2,900 cubic miles supports a diverse ecosystem with over 80 species of fish, including native species like lake trout and introduced species such as rainbow trout. Lake Superior plays a significant economic role, supporting shipping and commercial fishing industries. Its oligotrophic nature means it has fewer dissolved nutrients, resulting in clearer waters but lower fish productivity compared to other Great Lakes.
