Neil Armstrong was a renowned American astronaut, engineer, and naval aviator who became the first person to set foot on the Moon. Born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Armstrong developed an early interest in aviation and became a licensed pilot at the age of 15. He studied aeronautical engineering at Purdue University and later served in the United States Navy as a naval aviator during the Korean War. Armstrong's passion for space exploration led him to join the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), which later became the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He was selected as an astronaut in 1962 and went on to participate in several space missions, including Gemini 8 and Apollo 11. On July 20, 1969, Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin landed on the Moon's surface in the Lunar Module Eagle, while Michael Collins remained in orbit around the Moon in the Command Module Columbia. Armstrong's historic words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind," have become iconic and symbolize the significance of his achievement.
