Laos, officially the Lao People's Democratic Republic, is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand. Its landscape is dominated by mountainous terrain, with the highest peak being Phou Bia at 2,818 meters. The country features diverse ecosystems, including forests and fertile plateaus like the Bolaven Plateau. The Mekong River forms a significant part of its western boundary. Laos is renowned for its cultural heritage, with ancient Buddhist temples, such as the UNESCO World Heritage site of Luang Prabang, showcasing its rich history. Laos boasts a unique blend of French colonial architecture and traditional Buddhist structures. The population is primarily Theravada Buddhist, with about 60% practicing this faith. The country is divided into three main ethnic groups: Lao Loum, Lao Theung, and Lao Soung. Laos offers a serene environment with minimal mass tourism, allowing visitors to experience its pristine natural beauty and cultural authenticity.
