Larry Brown is a renowned American basketball coach and former player, celebrated for his emphasis on fundamentals and strategic team play. Born on September 14, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, Brown's basketball career began at the University of North Carolina, where he was an All-Atlantic Coast Conference player. He later played professionally in the American Basketball Association (ABA), winning a championship with the Oakland Oaks in 1969. Brown's coaching career spans over four decades, with notable achievements at both the collegiate and professional levels. He led UCLA to the 1980 Final Four and Kansas to the 1988 NCAA title. In the NBA, Brown coached several teams, including the Detroit Pistons, with whom he won the 2004 NBA championship. He is the only coach to have won both an NCAA and NBA title. Brown was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002 and received the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.
