Holmes's early life was marked by financial struggles, prompting him to drop out of school in the seventh grade to work. He began amateur boxing at nineteen and turned professional in 1973. His career was significantly influenced by his experience as a sparring partner for legendary boxers like Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali. Holmes's professional career is highlighted by his exceptional defensive skills and powerful left jab, earning him the nickname "The Easton Assassin." He successfully defended his title twenty times, second only to Joe Louis. Holmes's most notable victories include wins over Ken Norton and Muhammad Ali.
