Lennart Bergelin
PersonAbout
Lennart Bergelin was a renowned Swedish tennis player and coach, born on June 10, 1925, in Alingsås, Sweden. As a player, he achieved significant success, winning nine Swedish championship singles titles and the French Open doubles title in 1948 alongside Jaroslav Drobny. Bergelin was a key figure in Sweden's Davis Cup team, playing 89 matches and winning 63 of them. He was awarded the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal in 1950 for his outstanding performance against Australia in the Interzone final. Bergelin's coaching career is perhaps most notable for his partnership with Björn Borg, whom he coached from 1971 to 1983. During this period, Borg won 11 Grand Slam titles, including six French Open and five Wimbledon championships. Bergelin's coaching style focused on nurturing Borg's natural talent rather than altering his technique. He played a multifaceted role in Borg's career, managing both on and off-court aspects. Bergelin's legacy extends beyond his work with Borg, as he also led Sweden to its first Davis Cup victory in 1975. He passed away on November 4, 2008, at the age of 83.
