Lions are majestic carnivorous mammals known for their distinctive manes and powerful roars. They inhabit savannas, grasslands, and open woodlands, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. Lions are unique among big cats as they live in social groups called prides, which typically consist of several lionesses, their cubs, and one or more males. These prides are crucial for effective hunting and defense against intruders. Lionesses often do most of the hunting, using coordinated attacks to capture prey like zebras and wildebeests. As apex predators, lions play a vital role in maintaining ecosystem balance by controlling herbivore populations, preventing overgrazing, and preserving vegetation diversity. Their presence indirectly benefits other species by maintaining healthy habitats. Despite their importance, lions face threats such as habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and prey decline. They are classified as vulnerable, with the Asiatic lion population being endangered. Lions are skilled scavengers and will eat carrion if available, further highlighting their adaptability in diverse environments.
