About

Los Vientos Wind Farm is a significant onshore wind project located in Starr and Willacy counties, South Texas. It boasts a total installed capacity of 912 megawatts, making it the second largest wind farm in the United States. The project was developed by Duke Energy Renewables in five phases, with construction beginning in 2012 and completing in 2016. The wind farm utilizes a mix of turbine models from Siemens, Mitsubishi, and Vestas to generate electricity. The electricity produced by Los Vientos Wind Farm is sufficient to power approximately 120,000 Texas homes. It is distributed through the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid to customers including CPS Energy, Austin Energy, Garland Power & Light, Greenville Electric Utility System, and Bryan Texas Utilities. The farm has also implemented innovative bat deterrent systems to reduce environmental impacts. Its operation highlights the growing importance of renewable energy in Texas and the U.S.
