Louis XIV, known as the Sun King, was the King of France from 1643 until his death in 1715. He is renowned for centralizing power in France, creating a strong absolute monarchy that lasted until the French Revolution. Louis XIV believed in the divine right of kings, viewing himself as God's representative on earth. He eliminated feudal remnants by compelling nobles to reside at Versailles, effectively pacifying the aristocracy and consolidating his control. Louis XIV was also a patron of the arts, promoting French culture through grand architectural projects like Versailles and supporting artists and musicians. His reign saw significant military expansions, including the Franco-Dutch War and the War of the Spanish Succession. Despite his achievements, Louis XIV's wars strained France's resources, leaving the kingdom in debt upon his death. His legacy includes the establishment of the French Academy of Sciences and the construction of the Canal du Midi, showcasing his impact on both politics and culture.
